EYSO RECOGNIZED FOR Programming of the Year AND Conductor of the YearĀ

EYSO is excited to announce we were recently awarded two awards from the Illinois Council of Orchestras through its annual awards program recognizing orchestras, conductors, and volunteers that have demonstrated exceptional achievement. Conductor and Artistic Director Mr. Matthew Sheppard has been named the Community/Small Orchestra Conductor of the Year, and EYSO received the Programming of the Year award. The 2022 ICO Awards are based on achievements of the 2020-21 season.Ā

This is a huge honor for the entire organization for which we are incredibly grateful. A special thank you to all that were involved in the 45th season Myths & Legends.Ā Ā

STARTER STRINGS HITS THE STAGEĀ

Monday, March 14 was an important day for the Oakhill Elementary School fourth graders who participate in EYSOā€™sĀ StarterĀ Strings program. They performed in their very first concert as part of the schoolā€™s Spring Sing Concert.Ā Ā

The performance was a dream come true for school music teacher Kris Cooper. Last fall when 36 students had just started free, weekly, after-school violin lessons with Artistic Director Matthew Sheppard, Cooper envisioned the students performing on stage in the spring.Ā  Ā

ā€œWe are going to let everyone know what these kids can do. Weā€™re going to show this,ā€ said Cooper.

Monday night the enthusiastic students, under the direction of Sheppard and Primo Conductor Tracy Dullea, performed before an appreciative packed house of parents and students. Their performance of basic violin exercises and Mary Had a Little LambĀ receivedĀ thunderous applause.Ā

ā€œThese students had never touched a violin before the fall, and now they know the basics. I am hopeful that this program will open new doors for them,ā€ said Cooper.

Starter Strings is an EYSO initiative that eliminates some of the traditional barriers of classical music education. In addition to being tuition free, all students received access to instruments free of charge thanks to William Harris Lee & Company.Ā
