EYSO’s Youth Symphony has spent the last week of concert preparations firmly focused on monumental repertoire by Mahler, Martinu, and Sibelius — the Finnish composer’s famed violin concerto for which they will be joined by acclaimed violinist Rachel Barton Pine. Each autumn, EYSO invitesĀ Philharmonia and Youth Symphony students to auditionĀ for the prestigious opportunity to perform a concerto with their orchestra. Ā Past winners have performed masterworks by Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Max Bruch, Dmitri Kabalevsky, and Edouard Lalo, to name just a few. On Saturday, October 17, studentsĀ auditioned for a panel of expert adjudicators composed of music educators and teaching artists from throughout Chicago, and three exceptional winners were announced the following day. We are proud to announce that the EYSO has received the Programming of the Year award from the Illinois Council of Orchestras, in recognition of the innovative musical presentations in our 2013-14 Bardology season, which explored music influenced by William Shakespeare. At our March Soirees Musicales concerts, we were thrilled to honor EYSO’s 2015 Music Educator of the Year: Lynne Green, founder of the Lynne Green School of Flute and longtime band director at St. Patrick Catholic School in St. Charles.
