Taking Note – Issue 33, December 2021

December 21, 2021

EYSO wishes you and your family a wonderful and fun-filled holiday season. We thank each of you for your continued support and for being a part of the EYSO family. We are so excited for what is to come in 2022!

A YEAR TO CELEBRATE

“What happens when you turn things uʍop ǝpısdn? New meanings, amazing possibilities, and alternative realities reveal themselves, showing different ways to make sense of the world around us. Artists, philosophers, and visionaries know that a changed perspective can make a world of difference, a little push can go a long way—and when we throw out the rulebook, anything can happen…”

Artistic director Matthew Sheppard wrote these words to describe FLIPPED, our 2021-2022 season theme, but this sentiment could just as easily be applied to the year that has just passed. Throughout the year, even with COVID challenges, EYSO has found a way to flip perspective and continue to advance artistry, confidence, and curiosity for EYSO musicians.

From virtual audiences at the beginning of 2021 to the eager return of in-person audiences in the fall, a new normal never felt so good. The "buzz" of concertgoers that resonated through the halls of the Elgin Community College Arts Center at our November concerts symbolized determination and perseverance. Our Honor Chamber Ensembles returned to community events throughout the area, helping extend EYSO visibility to more than 16,300 individuals in 2021. Flute Choir made its debut at our November concert, marking the newest addition to the EYSO ensemble family.

And a vision became a reality when EYSO's "Starter Strings" came to life in September at Oakhill Elementary School in Streamwood. Through strong partnerships with School District U-46 and William Harris Lee & Company, EYSO put string instruments into the hands of 34 young, energized fourth graders and provided high-quality lessons at no cost to student families. EYSO believes everyone should have access to music education and the fundamentals it provides. "Starter Strings" is just the beginning to help on this journey.

Anything is possible when you have the support of so many incredible people. EYSO families, donors, volunteers, and our community partners: you make EYSO and our nearly 300 students stronger, more vibrant, and leaders both in music and in their lives.

EYSO IN THE COMMUNITY

It was a busy month for EYSO's Honors Chamber Ensembles. A special thanks to The Edward Shock Centre of Elgin, the Saint Charles Public Library, and the Downtown Neighborhood Association of Elgin for welcoming three EYSO ensembles to participate in their December community events. EYSO finds so much joy in performing throughout the community and sharing our love of music..

EYSO EVENTS COMMITTEE

The EYSO Events Committee is looking for volunteers to help plan and execute upcoming fundraising events for the organization. The committee currently meets two Mondays a month at 2:45pm. If you are interested or would like more information, please contact Allison Winsor, board member and events committee chair, at awinsor@eyso.org.
As the year comes to a close, this is your last chance in 2021 to make a life-changing investment in the lives of our students. Your donation to EYSO today will provide:

  • Access for more students who otherwise would not be able to participate due to financial barriers.
  • A more diverse repertoire of music deepening the students' journey of inquiry, creativity, and growth.
  • A broader EYSO reach through expanded community programs such as Starter Strings that make our communities stronger.
Thank you for your meaningful gift and ensure that you are making a real difference in the lives of so many.
