Flute Choir
See Us in Action
EYSO’s newest ensemble, Flute Choir, offers a specialized opportunity for the many talented flute players who audition for EYSO to continue growing their skills. Flute players in Sinfonia and Philharmonia are automatically enrolled in Flute Choir, as well as interested students not yet playing in an EYSO orchestra. Together, they explore a wide range of specialized flute repertoire and techniques while providing an opportunity each week for players of varying skill levels and experience to collaborate and learn from one another.
In addition to exploring repertoire for flute choir, musicians focus on ensemble and individual playing skills: intonation, blending, balancing parts, and using proper flute technique. Students also have the opportunity to practice and perform on the extended flute family, including piccolo, alto flute, and bass flute.
Flute Choir is led by Ruth Cavanaugh.
Recent repertoire performed by Flute Choir includes:
- Joseph Bodin de Boismortier – Concerto No. 1 in G Major
- Timothy Hagen – Big and Bright
- George Frideric Handel – Royal Fireworks Overture
- Erik Satie – Gnossienne No. 1
- Alessandro Scarlatti – Sonata in F Major

Flute choir rehearses most Sundays, September-May, from 5:35-6:35 pm at Elgin Community College. Students may miss up to two rehearsals per concert cycle, with special criteria for dress rehearsal absences, without impacting their eligibility to perform.
In addition to weekly rehearsals, students are expected to participate in Fall Camp, prior to the start of the season, as well as Friday evening and/or Saturday dress rehearsals scheduled in advance of each concert.
Flute Choir typically performs three concerts each season in the Blizzard Theatre at the Elgin Community College Arts Center. The 2025-2026 concert schedule is:
- November 16, 2025 (It’s All Relative)
