James Allen
James G. Allen, Jr. is a dedicated philanthropist and community leader serving on the board of the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestras (EYSO). His diverse experiences and unwavering commitment to service contribute significantly to EYSO's mission of enriching young musicians' lives through the study and performance of excellent music.
A resident of Elgin, Illinois, James lives with his partner, Peter, and their nephew, William, whom they've helped raise since he was seven. Now 21, William represents the family's commitment to nurturing the next generation.
As the second person in his family to graduate high school and the first to earn a college degree, James deeply understands the importance of a well-rounded, sustainable education that includes the arts. He graduated with high honors from Elgin Community College, earning an Associate in Arts and an Associate in Applied Science in Paralegal Studies with a 3.9 GPA. His academic achievements include membership in the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society, and his considerable leadership roles which include Student Trustee, Vice President of Student Government, and President of Students Who Are Not Silent (SWANS), the LGBTQIA+ student organization. His leadership extended beyond campus through internships; one with Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi's office where he focused on housing insecurities, and with the Kane County State's Attorney's Office, where he supported victims within the domestic violence and drug unit.
Professionally, James has been a Flight Attendant with United Airlines since 2006. His recent acceptance into the International Purser Program, a leadership-based initiative, reflects his commitment to excellence and service at the highest level. This role has honed his skills in communication, problem-solving, and customer service, which he applies to his philanthropic endeavors.
James's legal career is driven by a desire to support underserved communities. Previously, as a Paralegal at the Law Offices of Andrew J. Sosnowski, he dedicated most of his time to providing pro bono legal services through Volunteers of America Illinois (VOAIL), supporting veterans under their Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) Program. Now as a private consultant, he assists law firms and legal clinics in implementing efficient digital management systems which provides attorneys and paralegals more time to assist their clients.
His commitment to public service extends to multiple areas within the Elgin community. In addition to EYSO, James serves on the board of Open Door Health Center of Illinois, is a member of the Bright Futures Campaign Cabinet of the Elgin Community College Foundation, and sits on Elgin Community College’s Paralegal Advisory Committee.
Through his multifaceted involvement in the Elgin community, James embodies the spirit of service and dedication to nurturing young talent. His passion for music, commitment to education, and drive to support underserved populations make him an invaluable asset to the EYSO board and the broader community. James continues to foster spaces where young musicians, aspiring professionals, and community members can grow, thrive, and make meaningful contributions to society.
