Taking Note – September 2022

September 28, 2022

Our 47th season, DESIGN, is officially underway! With much enthusiasm and delight, we kicked off the new season with more than 300 students from nearly 70 communities at Fall Camp. Along with incredible music-making and community-building, ensembles participated in creative activities ranging from Philharmonia’s paper airplane contest to the thought-provoking, interactive Maud Powell String Quartet performance. Thank you to all who made this magic possible!

Make sure to get your tickets for the season! Tickets are available for purchase through tickets.elgin.edu. Livestream tickets will also be available to purchase soon at eyso.org/concert

At EYSO, we believe that music education is both meaningful and valuable to everyone—and we recognize that access to high-quality music education isn’t always even across our communities. To spread EYSO’s unique brand of learning and growth we teamed up with Oakhill Elementary School in the fall of 2020, and started dreaming. This year we added our second U-46 (Elgin) district elementary school, O’Neal! Through the program, we provide students tuition-free music education and rental instruments free of charge.

Over the course of the year, we work with partners at both schools to develop a plan that removes traditional barriers for students: transportation, tuition, and instrument rental. On August 18th, Tracy Dullea, new director of Starter Strings, and Anaka Riani, operations coordinator, visited Oakhill and O'Neal to begin the signup process for this year's program. Students and families received program information, instrument sizing, and other EYSO goodies, along with Ms. Dullea’s beautiful violin performance. Along with student interest, multiple teachers wanted to join, learning alongside their students, demonstrating a growth mindset and a life-long learning spirit. A special thanks to the supportive staff from both schools. We are eager to kickstart the program this year!

P.S. - Have a string instrument you can donate to help supply our students? Let us know! Fractional sizes (1/2 and 3/4) are particularly helpful. Special thanks to our William Harris Lee & Co. And other Chicagoland partners who have helped supply instruments.

Join us in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, recognizing the achievements and contributions of Hispanic Americans, past and present, who have inspired success in others. Check out this Hispanic Heritage Month video that revisits Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas and his monumental piece, Sensemayá (performed by Youth Symphony during the 46th season). The video is contributed by summer intern, Savanna Huang.

Have you or someone you know watched an EYSO livestream concert in the past two years?
