Message from the Chamber Music Institute Director

Our last CMI recital took place in the form of a video playlist, recorded part-by part separately at home. Now we are closer ā€”at armā€™s length, the audience live over wifiā€”and I am reflecting on what it means to play ā€œtogetherā€.

Playing together is one of the fundamental challenges of chamber music. Chamber musicians play without a conductor, finding their own common feeling of momentum. Without the luxury of mind-reading, we watch for signals: a gesture, the measured sound of a breath, or the inevitability of a musical shape.

Apart ten feet or two, chamber groups strive to agree on a shared understanding of pulse and rhythm, and eventually develop a larger concept of phrase and meaning. What I have valued from this semesterā€™s work has been seeing these ensembles building togetherness regardless of the challenges: learning to listen even harder and signal even stronger. I will be watching this distanced livestream with a full heart, knowing that even with spaces of six or ten feet, our students are making art to fill these gaps.
