Kathy Matthews became EYSO Executive Director in May 1999. She manages the daily operation of all four EYSO ensembles. Her responsibilities include publicity, arrangements for rehearsals, concerts, auditions, camps and tours as well as development, and grant and award applications. Matthews was instrumental in the EYSO receiving the Illinois Council of Orchestras 2001 Outstanding Marketing Program of the Year Award.
Matthews received her BA in mathematics and physics from Dominican University. After graduation she worked as a computer software engineer in the telecommunications industry. Recently she attended the Graduate School of Business at Dominican University. She currently serves in the American Symphony Orchestra League's Mentoring Program for other executive directors and as Second Vice President of the Illinois Council of Orchestras.
Prior to her work with the EYSO, Matthews served on the board of music organizations at the middle and high school levels in St. Charles and was a substitute teacher in area school districts. In addition she has extensive experience in meeting planning for several national organizations. She is also a frequent lecturer on the subject of Judging Art Needlework as well as a judge and teacher in art needlework on the local, state, and national levels. She currently serves as the Chairman of the national Judging Certification Committee of the American Needlepoint Guild.
Kathy's daughter, Sarah, was a member of the Elgin Youth Symphony through her senior year in high school. Sarah recently graduated from the Lawrence University Conservatory with a B. M. in flute performance. Sarah is responsible for Matthews' EYSO involvement. Kathy's husband, Tom, volunteers his time in many ways for the EYSO.
